BESS Engineer
Are you an energy engineer passionate about solving complex technical challenges and accelerating the clean energy transition?
Fantastic – welcome to Alight! We're a fast-growing scale-up with a bold purpose: to kick carbon off the grid by helping businesses save money with solar — and now also storage — from day one. As one of Europe’s leading solar IPPs, we’re scaling up our BESS capabilities and need brilliant minds to help us make it happen.
That’s where you come in. As our first BESS Engineer, you’ll play a central role in shaping Alight’s battery storage offering. This is a rare opportunity to take part in both project execution and product design — building our BESS capabilities from the ground up and creating a true impact on the energy system of tomorrow.
Your impact
This is a hybrid position combining Product Engineer and Project Engineer responsibilities. At the start, your focus will be on integrating BESS into current projects (~70% project execution / ~30% product development). As internal knowledge grows, the role will shift towards 100% product ownership — defining our system architecture and guiding the full BESS lifecycle.
What You'll Do
Across All Stages:
Design and optimize BESS solutions: system sizing, architecture, component selection
Ensure compliance with grid codes, safety standards, and certifications
Develop and maintain design guidelines, technical specifications, FAT procedures, and commissioning protocols
Support supplier selection and contract negotiations, especially technical annexes
Align with Revenue, Development, and Construction teams on technical and commercial viability
When Focused on Product Engineering:
Lead the full product lifecycle of our BESS systems — from concept to commissioning
Propose innovative solutions to complex challenges in design and integration
Mentor and train internal teams on BESS technologies and standards
Translate regulatory, market, and grid requirements into technical designs
When Focused on Project Engineering:
Lead or support design reviews to ensure technical compliance and performance
Coordinate with EPCs, Owner’s Engineers, and Technical Advisors on execution and testing
Modify and adapt base designs to project-specific needs
Ensure smooth handoffs across Development, Engineering, and Construction teams
We’re looking for you
You’re probably a BESS or energy systems engineer with a strong technical background and a genuine interest in clean tech innovation. Whether you come from a project delivery or product development angle — or ideally both — you love solving problems, building systems, and working across departments.
Must-haves:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
4+ years in BESS or related energy sector roles
Deep understanding of BESS technologies (especially LFP), system design, grid integration
Experience with SCADA, QA/QC, and CAD tools
Comfortable communicating across suppliers, contractors, and internal teams
Fluent in English (C1 Level)
Nice-to-haves:
Experience in the Nordic market
Familiarity with ancillary services (FCR, aFRR, etc.)
Nordic language skills (Swedish, Finnish)
